Resume guide

Resume roast example: fix 3 vague lines.

Your resume should tell a recruiter what you did. Too many lines only say you had a job. Here is how to spot that gap and fix it without making things up.

Read the top third first

Cover your name and contact details. Can someone identify your target role and your strongest relevant contribution? If the answer is no, start there. A polished layout cannot explain work your words leave out.

Compare your evidence with the job ad. Move the most relevant real work higher. Do not paste requirements into your resume unless you can honestly support them.

1. Name the work, not the responsibility

Skip line
“Responsible for various duties across teams.”
Recruiter’s read
“Various duties” tells me nothing. I cannot tell what you actually handled.
Supporting details in this fictional example
Sam scheduled new-hire setup, checked access requests, and maintained an onboarding checklist.
Sample Rewrite
“Coordinated new-hire setup with IT and maintained the onboarding checklist.”
This names the task and the team. It does not claim setup became faster without evidence.

2. Replace a trait with something you did

Skip line
“Excellent communication skills and a strong team player.”
Recruiter’s read
You have given me a self-rating. Show me where those skills were used.
Supporting details in this fictional example
Sam sent a weekly update listing open customer issues and the colleague handling each one.
Sample Rewrite
“Sent weekly customer-issue updates, naming the next step and the colleague responsible.”
The reader can see communication in action. You do not need to label yourself excellent.

3. Separate contribution from company results

Skip line
“Helped the company grow significantly.”
Recruiter’s read
What grew? What did you contribute? “Significantly” leaves both questions unanswered.
Supporting details in this fictional example
Sam tracked incoming inquiries and assigned follow-ups. There is no verified revenue figure.
Sample Rewrite
“Tracked incoming customer inquiries and assigned follow-ups to the sales team.”
This states the contribution. It does not turn support work into an unverified sales result.

No numbers? Do not invent them.

A number can show scope: customers served, reports prepared, or people supported. It does not have to be a revenue increase. Use records you can check, not a plausible-looking guess.

If you cannot verify a number, name the task, tool, audience, or deliverable instead. Say what happened, not what you hoped would happen. Keep team results separate from your own contribution.

Santa Clara University recommends describing the context, your action, and the result, quantifying when possible. UC Davis also suggests evidence such as timeframe, workload, and people served. These are writing recommendations, not proof that a particular bullet will earn an interview.

Find the evidence before the wording

Look at a past project, not a list of flattering verbs. What did you make, organise, check, or resolve? Write down the starting problem, your part, and the actual outcome before editing the bullet. If the outcome is unknown, describe the completed work instead.

Use your own permitted records to check details. Do not include confidential customer names or internal figures. A clear description of scope is enough when a precise number would reveal private information. Keep language accurate enough that you could explain the line in an interview.

Check your next line

  1. Underline the action. Can a reader picture what you did?
  2. Circle the evidence. Can you explain where it came from?
  3. Check the job ad. Does this line show relevant work?
  4. Read it aloud. Would you actually say it that way?
  5. Remove any result you cannot support. Plain and true beats impressive and false.

Start with one weak line, not a complete rewrite. Keep the original beside your edit so nothing important disappears.
